Voices of Monmouth – Together

Lleisiau Mynwy – Gydan Gilydd

Community Event – 24th October 2019

Voices of Monmouth – Together / Lleisiau Mynwy – Gydan Gilydd is specifically for and by the people of Monmouth. A performance of contemporary music with various choirs, singers, musicians and participants from the town. Several accomplished players from South Wales will also take part. The intent is to bring together members of Monmouth Male Voice Choir, Community Choir, Choral Societies, Singers and Players from the schools. Also any local amateur singers and players who wish to take part.

The choral pieces will be simultaneously in English and Welsh. The form lends itself to multiple languages being used.

“Voices of Monmouth – Together/ Lleisiau Mynwy – Gydan Gilydd” performance will be ‘in the round’ but the audience will be surrounded by the players and singers.

The Event

The evening consists of a performance of Cornelius Cardew’s “The Great Learning: Paragraph 3”.  Performed by combined choirs and orchestra from the local community. Acclaimed Cardiff based composer, Ashley John Long, starts the evening with a new piece. A virtuoso double bass player, Ashley will present the piece in person with two other professional players.

Graphical scores will be used throughout. All participants and the audience will get copies. They will also be projected on several screens around the venue.

The reasons for choosing Cardew’s piece are many: The emphasis of this piece is self discovery within a community (of musicians). It is self-educating, playing something very simple yet, when taken seriously it produces a totally new experience. For the musicians for most of the time they are playing one note. Listening to their own note production and how it blends with others. For the singers the words are sung to a proscribed pitch but the tempo and the words that are chosen from the lyric sheet are the decision of the individual singer.

About Music In Monmouth

Formed in 2005, Music in Monmouth is a community arts group with a mission to bring new, original music events to the widest possible audience in Monmouthshire.

A major purpose is to present arts, particularly music, which is outside of most people’s listening experience at an affordable price, usually free, so that people have a chance to experience a much wider spectrum of musical experiences. It is both artistically enhancing and educates a future audience; breaking away from the ‘I know what I like’ mantra and the  channelling effects of  streaming media. We are generally self funding and enjoy support from some local philanthropists.

Touring Circuit

We have achieved an international reputation and have hosted many events with renowned players from USA, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Faroe Islands, Germany, Ireland and in the UK we are a ‘must play’ town for many leading players in the avant garde and experimental music scenes, often providing the first step in establishing national tours.

Our main venue, but not exclusive, is the Queens Head Inn in Monmouth where we have been hosting approximately one major event a month for the past 14 years. We provide the opportunity for anyone to walk into a pub and be faced with world class, original, alternative music from which they can make an informed decision.

Artist Profile

Some artists of note have been Get the Blessing, The Partisans, Back Door, Eugene Chadbourne (USA), Alan Wilkinson & Akode (Norway), Trevor Watts, Paul Dunmall, Dominic Lash, Ashley John Long, Pat Thomas, Amanpondo (South Africa), Yazid Fentazi (Algeria), and many, many more. We’ve also staged major events such as the  ‘Billy Jenkins Big Fight’ at the Blake Theatre,Monmouth, various gigs in The Nave, Grosmont, and even staged a film and music premier ‘Maurice El Medioni’. Checkout https://www.queensheadmonmouth.co.uk/listen and also their Archive page for the majority of our regular activities.

Current Main Project

We are currently organising a musical event in the Autumn called “Voices of Monmouth – Together“. This will actively engage various groups within the town, introduce them to a new participating musical experience, present a new work and hopefully establish this as a vanguard for similar events for years to come. We’ve been presenting new, original music in various forms, accessible to all, since 2005 and have developed an international reputation for touring groups of artists outside of the mainstream, and wish to expand these activities onto a wider canvas.
